While in the city of Nafplio my husband and I walk the narrow streets, stop for a gelato, stroll along the waterfront, and at a distance we observe the Bourtzi water castle located in the city’s harbor.
This castle has so much history starting from Venetians completing its fortifications in 1473, lost it to the Turks, and Greeks regaining it in 1822. Then in 1865, served as a fortress, then transformed into residence of executioners of convicts.
It became a hotel from 1930 to 1970 and now mainly a tourist attraction. The city has preserved it’s aesthetic beauty and some parts are under construction.
It’s what a mini water castle would look like in my mind. I really will not need 22 rooms.
